05/13/10: Scientists Find Use for Cigarette Butts

Cigarette butts are very toxic; they could kill many things, like fish. Recently, scientists have found a use for these dangerous chemical extracts. The fact that they help prevent the rusting of steel pipes was discovered in Hong Kong. They applied the chemical extract to a N80, which is a type of steel for oil pipes, and it protected the pipes by preventing the rusting. The scientists told that the chemicals, such as nicotine, cause the anti-corrosion effect. Now the millions of dollars that oil producers spend on replacing or repairing the corrosions of steel pipes could be saved. The cigarette butts could be recycled and reused in a very positive way. This demonstrates that some things that are harmful could also at times help people; and there are many things that people perceive to be of no use anymore may have a use yet to be discovered.
