05/02/10: Supercomputer!
Of course everyone is aware of the fast-growing technology, right? Well, but has everyone heard of Blue Waters? Not yet, because it's a supercomputer still being developed! Complex computational chemistry will not be a problem once Blue Waters is fully powered up because its speed will allow quadrillion calculations each second! Ames Laboratory and Iowa State University researchers are hoping to use Blue Waters to further sophisticate two software codes: GAMESS and NWChem. There have been three specific research problems that have been too complicated for current tools to do full-scale calculations; but with the power of Blue Waters, it can scale up the software codes and give more accurate answers to the three conundrums. When these conundrums are resolved, our society can benefit from the results. For example, the understanding of how dendrimers bind to ligands will increase health technologies. Also, the understanding of the aerosols existing in our atmosphere and their growth is directly linked to the understanding of our atmosphere’s chemistry. Finally, understanding of molecular dynamics in water may be able to predict water behavior. With the power of Blue Waters, so many new doors will open for our scientists!
